The “Right” Attorney vs. Any Attorney

September, 2017

Stuff happens. Traffic infractions, real estate sales, home rentals or purchases, family matters, etc. When a medical issue or question arises, most of us have a doctor we call... but what about when you have a legal need? Who do you turn to? How do you go about selecting the right attorney for you?

Here are some points to keep in mind when seeking an attorney:

Am I comfortable enough to be open and honest?

In order for the attorney to be effective on your behalf, they will need information from you. Anything less than the complete facts can compromise their ability to help you. You will need to be comfortable enough with the attorney to tell him or her the complete details without holding anything back.

What are the attorney’s areas of expertise?

Whenever possible, finding an attorney with a strong track record in the area of your legal matter is a big plus. Some states have certifications for certain specialties so check if your state has such a certification for the area of law you need assistance with and then you can check if the attorney you are considering has that certification. You can also ask about the types and volume of cases they have handled to get a good idea of their area(s) of expertise.

Where is the attorney located?

It may seem obvious but you will want to choose an attorney credentialed in the state that is appropriate for your legal matter. It can be very helpful as well if the attorney is conveniently located should you need to meet in person at their office. If a court date is involved consider the attorney’s proximity to the courthouse as attorney’s may charge for travel time to and from court.

Hiring an attorney

While asking family, friends or work colleagues for a recommendation is a logical first step, be aware that they may like an attorney that helped them with legal matters very different from your own. Also, the attorney they used may not be affordable for you.  If you are contemplating hiring an attorney that offers discounted legal care, Legal Club can offer professional assistance selecting an attorney that practices the appropriate area of law, speaks your language and is conveniently located.

Self Referrals

Self referrals often lead to bad outcomes. So, rather than rely on that colleague’s recommendation or simply choosing an attorney from a list, you may want to consider that a professional legal service such as Legal Club has the resources and experience required to refer you to a pre-qualified attorney appropriate for your particular legal matter.
